Munchkin
Short-legged cats have been seen in England as early as the 1930s, but many were wiped out during World War II. Sandra Hochenedel, a music instructor from Louisiana, discovered two cats hidden in a truck after being pursued by a bulldog in 1983. After saving the cats and taking them home, Sandra discovered that these short-legged females were expecting. One of the cats gave birth - and Sandra Hochenedel presented one of the kitties to her friend Kay LaFrance. Soon, the village was teeming with Munchkins cats, all named after characters in L. Frank Baum's children's fantasy novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. LaFrance contacted Dr. Solveig Pflueger, chairwoman of The International Cat Association's (TICA) genetics committee, to learn more about the breed. Now the Munchkin is known for its medium sized body type and head shape, with a thick, plush coat.
